I really enjoyed creating my ‘Impossible Film’, the idea was to make a film on something you could not see, so I chose ‘Pulsars’. Pulsars form when a star collapses under its own weight... they don’t admit light instead produce radio waves out of the magnetic poles. As the Pulsar rotates, these beams cross the Earth's path and are picked up by radios and giant telescopes. I have always been fascinated with astronomy, so this film gave me the opportunity to learn how to condense such a big subject/information into a 5min film that everyone can understand. StarGazing Live: It was a huge honour to be able to share a personal connection in this film, as in 2016, I became a Citizen Scientist and joined the StarGazing Live UK wide call out to help them hunt a Pulsar! Remarkably, after looking through over 3000 possible Pulsar classifications, myself and my brother discovered a Pulsar live on air. We were able to meet our childhood heroes and this experience ultimately inspired me on this science + natural history filmmaking pathway I'm on today! Filming techniques: As I could only use a small amount of archive, I was excited to experiment with as many different filming techniques and set building as I could to recreate Space! What made this film different was that I presented and self-shot the film, juggling the set building, specific scientific props created, camera and presenting. Marco filming techniques also played an invaluable role as I created a number of different sets from ink drops within water (to recreate the Sun) to hand crafted Pulsar Props that I created using craft equipment, I then experimented with filming these Pulsar Props using a variety of different lighting and camera frame rates to create the desired effect of actually bringing to life/filming a real Pulsar out in space. Impossible Collaborations: It was really fun to work with my fellow Science and Natural History Students on their Impossible Projects, everyone had amazing film ideas and it was great to be able to help bring them to life!

From ancient sea wonders to futuristic Labs, each year Horseshoe Crabs are harvested as part of a mandatory blood donation, which is then used to save billions of lives and test almost every injectable medical product around the world. After studying for 2 years at the National Film and Television School (NFTS), in March 2026 I graduated and received an MFA in Directing and Producing Science and Natural History. As a graduation film, Blue Blood is a culmination of all my studies, allowing me the freedom to produce, direct and self-shot this film. Throughout the Production, I’ve been honoured to work alongside an amazing Team, who are all so incredibly talented and a joy to work with! I was also very lucky to be given the opportunity to work with Liz Bonnin, who kindly agreed to narrate my Grad film Blue Blood, it’s been a huge honour to work one of my childhood heroes! A huge thank you entire Blue Blood Team: Narrator – Liz Bonnin Producer Director and Camera Operator - Neeve Ó Flynn-Mundin Editor - Liz Doyle Sound Designer - Jacob Stone Composer – Ben Moss Colourist - Maddalena Oberti Production Manager – Rasmus Kroeger Production Coordinator - Shreya Desai Assistant Camera and Drone Operator – Aidan Ó Flynn-Mundin Behind the Scenes: This was the biggest shoot I have ever done, it has been an amazing experience to be able to see the whole process of creating a 20 min Grad film from beginning to end. As I was self-shooting this film, I decided that this film would really push me to go out of my ‘comfort zone’ and build on the 1st year and Impossible films. Having never travelled outside of the UK before, this film enabled me to travel to the US on 2 occasions... 1st to capture the time limited mass spawning event of the Horseshoe Crabs (where I had an assistant Camera/drone operator with me for the entire 16day shoot), 2nd unexpected solo shoot to the US to film within Eli Lilly’s Lab. On Location, during the time limited Nigh Mass Spawning event of Horseshoe Crabs in the US, I decided to use various coloured/UV lights and choreographed Drone filming, in order to capture the scale of the spawning and showcase how amazing + almost Alien looking of this incredible marine animals. Marco filming techniques also played an invaluable role as I created a number of different sets to explore Lab and microbiological processes/Bacterial development (which are withing a controlled environment).

The discovery of a mysterious Mermaid’s Purse washed up on Isle of Wight’s beaches, sparks the hunt to reveal the purses' true owners who are far more mystical than we could possibly imagine. We follow ‘Blue Seas Protection’, a marine conservation charity, to uncover the myths and fantastic facts behind this mystery species and discover that the eggcases belong to the elusive and globally endangered Undulate Skate, a close relative of the Sharks and Rays. Shark species are in decline across the world and a large proportion of our UK skate and shark species are actively being caught by fishing industries, for the UK Public’s favourite takeaway treat…Fish & Chips. When fishing vessels start to fish in areas where Skates lay their eggs, the charity must race to discover the locations and film where these Globally Endangered Skates are nesting. The evidence gathered will be used to petition the UK Government for a ‘No Fishing Zones’ in and around the nursery areas, preserving the local Undulate Skate population for the future. This was my First Year Film and allowed me to put all my production, camera and editing skills which I had developed over the 1st Year at National Film and Television School. As a UK based film, it was on a subject that, before coming to the NFTS, I was very passionate about and allowed me to really experiment with different types of storytelling styles.

Science Story – 5 min film that showcased the incredible work Scientists at Kent University were doing to monitor Defaunation in Indonesia, the scientific projects were funded by the Leverhulme Trust and this film was submitted to be showcased on the Leverhume’s website: https://media.leverhulme.ac.uk/video/struebig-defaunation During this production I interviewed a team of 5 (providing me with a lot of interview set up practice), I learnt how to negotiate interview dates/times and how to investigate each contributors research area during preproduction, which all helped to make the interview go smoothly and enabled me to showcase the most crucial information from this complicated subject. As a result, I feel that I have come a long way from the ‘Biography interview’ and I have gone on to hone these invaluable techniques during my First Year and Grad Films.

Actuality – To practice capturing different angles of a moving subject, we filmed a hand Car Wash and then edit the sequences together into a rough story. I chose to make my film have a Spy theme, which I believed at the time would aid the narrative, however in order to tell this spy story, I overlooked filming/editing techniques (that had I incorporated them), would have enhanced the film. Entertainment elements should never overshadow the story to the extent that it is counterproductive…and becomes a story for story sake. Through this process, I have discovered that I like to add an element of entertainment within all my films, however rather than letting this element dominate, I have learnt to used it in conjunction to aid the narrative making the film more enjoyable and enhancing audience engagement to the information within the film.

Over the Easter break we were given the assignment of experimenting with timelapse techniques. Timelapes film showed me the power of time and how sometime the simplest things can be the most powerful and by taking the time to add a timelapes within a film, enhances a greater appreciation for the place and time the story is set in.

This was the first time we had used macro lenses, although the films subjects meant to be snails/small insects, I chose to create a film about Sea Acidification, so I filmed simple experiments which would help to visualise global warming. This film was a very big idea (and topic), which at the time, I did not have the skills to achieve, however this film provided the perfect challenge to enable me to experiment with different Macro Technique which I have subsequently gone on to use in my Filming the Impossible/Grad Films. My Macro film also gave me the courage to not be afraid of creating a film on big subject, however in subsequent films I try to shape the information so that it is easy to understand.
